NBT Shows the Way at INSITE 09

NBT at INSITE 09

Specialist suppliers of high performance, sustainable building solutions, Natural Building Technologies provided a valuable demonstration of the construction of environmentally sound housing at BRE’s INSITE 09 event.

NBT’s ThermoPlan fired clay blocks were specified for use within The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment’s Natural House, which is currently under construction at BRE’s Innovation Park in Watford. The NBT team gave INSITE 09 visitors daily live demonstrations of the ThermoPlan wall block system to show its ease of use and speed of construction.

Designed as a low energy home built from natural materials, The Natural House is highly adaptable in design and able to accommodate changes in future long-term occupancy. The prototype being built at Watford is semi detached, with one side being a 3-bedroomed house and the other a one bedroom apartment and a maisonette. Intended to be quick and simple to construct, the materials for the house have been sourced to provide high levels of thermal insulation, while maximising the end of use recyclability.

As part of this design, NBT’s ThermoPlan fired clay, thin-joint wall block system is being used to construct the walls of the house. Based on high performance, low embodied energy blocks, the completed building will have excellent thermal performance and mass for both winter warmth and summer cooling, providing all-year-round energy efficiency. As ThermoPlan is also fully breathable, it ensures moisture is not trapped in the structure, helping to create a healthy internal atmosphere.

Using genuinely thin bed construction of just 1mm adhesive mortar, NBT’s ThermoPlan system benefits from exceptionally fast build times, as the timescales required for block-laying and drying out have been minimised. The quick and easy construction of the ThermoPlan system was demonstrated by HRH Prince Charles, who laid ThermoPlan bricks during a recent visit to The Natural House.

In addition to supplying the ThermoPlan system, nbt consult, the support and consultancy service which works alongside NBT, is providing project advice and guidance on how to maximise the sustainability and quality of build.

Neil May, Managing Director of NBT and nbt consult, concludes: “Through the construction of The Prince’s Foundation’s Natural House during INSITE 09, NBT provided valuable, live demonstrations of the process of building a sustainable house. Showing how natural building products, such as ThermoPlan are used in practice is essential to highlight the product’s ease of use and high performance, and make sustainable products more accessible to a wider audience.”
